ARIZONA COALITION TO END HOMELESSNESS

The Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness is a membership organization comprised of agencies that serve people who are homeless. The Coalition's mission is to strengthen the capacity of local communities to respond to homelessness through statewide leadership, technical assistance, and advocacy.

The Coalition retained Mary to guide them through their strategic planning process. They wanted to define their mission, develop a plan for the next three to five years, and build a realistic workplan for the coming year.

Mary developed a pre-retreat survey for Board and staff members that helped them define the internal strengths and weaknesses of the organization, as well as identify external opportunities and threats. The survey also assessed respondents' hopes and desires for the planning session, and elicited comments on the current mission.

Using a number of different processes to ensure continuing interest in the planning, Mary helped the group clarify their mission and write a vision statement. The group agreed that the new vision and mission not only clearly described the work of the Coalition, but also differentiated them from other organizations serving the needs of homeless people.

She then helped the group to define their goals and objectives for the next three to five years, and to put those goals and objectives in priority order. The last step was to develop action plans for each of the objectives and determine which of those action steps would be accomplished in the coming year.
